Christmas Lights Switch On 2017
NEWTON ABBOT CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH – ON - SATURDAY 25th NOVEMBER 2017
Newton Abbot Town Council organised a day of music and entertainment for all the family, to celebrate the switching on of the towns Christmas lights. During the day Coombeshead College students performed live music to the members of public and free face painting and balloon modelling was on offer to the public. There was compering throughout the day from Nigel Canham and Kay Yendall who kept the public up to date with the evening’s activities.
The excitement built as darkness approached, which signalled the start of the annual Father Christmas Parade. The Mayor and her Escort of Newton Abbot, the two Town Criers, the Borough Crier, Councillors, staff members, Carnival Queen and attendants, Carnival Fair maidens and musical organ paraded down Courtenay Street handing festive headbands and sweets to the youngsters . Black Bess Morris dancers, Newton Bushell and Heather & Gorse clog dancers entertained the crowds at the Clock Tower whilst the parade was on route. Once the lights had been switched on the evening ended with a fantastic firework finale from Wolborough Hill.
The Town Council are grateful to Newton Abbot Rotary Club, the Carnival Committee, Town Councillors and volunteers who put so much time, effort and enthusiasm into making this event such a lovely one for families each year. We are also extremely grateful to businesses, which contribute so generously to the Christmas lights fund, as it is with their support that Newton Abbot Town Council is able to put on such a splendid show of festive lights.
Natalie Hicks, Newton Abbot Town Council Events Co-ordinator:
‘What a brilliant switch on event we had. Crowds were massive and far bigger than we have ever had. It was great to see everyone attend the event in such great festive spirits. Father Christmas made his usual appearance to switch on the Christmas lights and all the children were over the moon to see him. Thank you to everyone who attended and to the time generously given by all volunteers on the day. Don’t miss out on our Christmas events coming up on the 6th, 13th & 20th December. There is plenty to keep all the family busy.’
