Newton Abbot skies light up for the Queen’s 90th Birthday beacon lighting

On Thursday 21st April, Newton Abbot Town Council lit three beacons within the town as part of the national event to help celebrate the Queen’s Birthday 90th birthday.

The three beacon areas in Newton Abbot were Buckland, Highweek and Wolborough where two types of beacons were lit for the occasion, gas powered at Buckland & Wolborough and a traditional basket Church Tower beacon at Highweek.

The lighting took place at 8.30pm with the help of Councillors from Newton Abbot Town Council and was attended by residents of the town and local youth groups.  Her Majesty The Queen initiated the event by lighting the Principle Beacon at Windsor Castle at 7pm, in turn sparking a chain of more than 1,000 being lit across the country.  We were even lucky enough to receive coverage from BBC Spotlight and BBC Radio Devon.

Over 1,000 beacons had been lit for this event throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday.  As many as 255 local communities, including town and parish councils, local authorities, youth groups and various organisations agreed to take part.

The lighting of the beacons was a fantastic way in uniting the nation in common celebration of this important milestone in The Queen’s life. The Beacon Project, by agreement with The Royal Household, formed an important part of The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.

There are more celebrations to follow on the weekend of the 11th June with celebrations in the town and Courtenay Park.
